About the Shuzan Workshop:
The Shuzan workshop, based in Kyoto, was one of the main producers of Satsuma pottery for export during the Meiji and Taisho periods. It specialized in pieces decorated with coloured glazes and gold details on the characteristic cream background with crazing, a technique that became iconic of Japanese export ceramics.
Design and Symbolism:
This piece incorporates classic elements of Japanese art. Bamboo symbolizes resilience and flexibility, mountains represent eternity and stability, while birds evoke freedom and harmony. The balanced composition reflects traditional Japanese aesthetics.
Authenticity:
The red seal with the characters Shuzan (暁山) on the reverse confirms the authenticity of this piece as high-quality export Satsuma pottery, produced between the late 19th and early 20th century.
Perfect for collectors of Satsuma ceramics, lovers of Japanese art, or as a statement piece in oriental-inspired decor.
Condition: Excellent state of preservation, no chips or cracks. Gilding preserved and paint intact. Natural crazing characteristic of the Satsuma technique.
Care: As Satsuma ceramics are porous and the crazing is real, cleaning is recommended only with a soft, damp cloth, avoiding prolonged immersion in water.
