Authentic talking plate in Portuguese earthenware from the historic Fábrica do Cavaco, Vila Nova de Gaia.

This example features a beautiful traditional floral decoration in cobalt blue, pink, and ochre yellow, with volute motifs and stylized flowers characteristic of the Portuguese "popular canton" style. In the center, a popular Portuguese proverb: "Small house, what riches does it matter that others have? We have peace and love in it, and the grace that God gives us!"

About the Brand and Origin

The mark, handwritten on the back, includes the words "CAVACO", "GAIA" and "PORTUGAL", typical of pieces for export or intended for collectors. The initial signature "AS" probably refers to the artist or decorator of the piece.

History of the Cavaco Factory

The Cavaco Factory was one of the most important historical ceramic factories in Vila Nova de Gaia, with roots dating back to the 18th century (originally known as the Cavaquinho Factory, established in 1768). The production of earthenware continued in various phases and in different factory units with the same or similar names in the region, such as the Monte Cavaco Factory and the Afurada Factory.

Pieces marked like this are often dated to the 20th century, although the factory's history is much older. The factory was known for producing a variety of earthenware, including utilitarian and decorative tableware such as talking plates (with popular sayings), jugs, pots, and other pieces with traditional floral decorations.

His tableware was exported, notably to Brazil, and earned recognition for its artisanal and decorative quality.

Heritage Importance

The Cavaco Factory is an important part of the ceramic industrial heritage of Vila Nova de Gaia. Its pieces are sought after by collectors of antiques and Portuguese ceramics. Examples of the factory's production are on display in museums, such as the Soares dos Reis National Museum.

A collector's item that celebrates Portuguese ceramic tradition and the popular wisdom conveyed through decorative proverbs.
